Elizabeth Lewis: Social Media Ethics

by Elizabeth Lewis on June 3, 2010

After lunch, there was an interesting presentation on the ethical issues with social media.  Many of the issues that were raised were in my presentation several months ago.  However, a few interesting tidbits:

  1. I had not heard about the branding issue with Nixon Peabody.  If you get a chance, check out the awesome video!  Yes, it does lend itself to some lawyer jokes.
  2. The presentation reaffirmed my presentation – South Carolina you can have problems if you adopt your listing on a site or have recommendations on a site like LinkedIn, you must make sure you comply with the ethics rules on advertising.
  3. You need to be really careful answering questions online because of unauthorized practice of law issues – only give generalized info and use disclaimers.

Finally, I really agreed with the speaker that social media is a powerful tool but you need to manage the risks – advertising issues, confidentiality, judicial relationships, and deception are just a few things to think about!
