After lunch, there was an interesting presentation on the ethical issues with social media. Many of the issues that were raised were in my presentation several months ago. However, a few interesting tidbits:
- I had not heard about the branding issue with Nixon Peabody. If you get a chance, check out the awesome video! Yes, it does lend itself to some lawyer jokes.
- The presentation reaffirmed my presentation – South Carolina you can have problems if you adopt your listing on a site or have recommendations on a site like LinkedIn, you must make sure you comply with the ethics rules on advertising.
- You need to be really careful answering questions online because of unauthorized practice of law issues – only give generalized info and use disclaimers.
Finally, I really agreed with the speaker that social media is a powerful tool but you need to manage the risks – advertising issues, confidentiality, judicial relationships, and deception are just a few things to think about!
